Employment skills training includes: Networking, building confidence, cold calling, resume building, cover letters, reference lists, using online job search techniques, how to prepare for interviews, and instructor led mock interviews.

The Employment Services (ES) objective is to deliver the following courses:

Introduction To Customer Service (16 Hours)

This course is based on Renee Evenson’s Customer Service Training 101 book which provides step-by-step, interactive lessons that can be adapted for students of any experience level. This course gives students proven, practical techniques for addressing important customer service topics, enabling them to:
Project a positive attitude and make a great first impression
Communicate effectively, both verbally and nonverbally
Develop trust, establish rapport, and make customers feel valued
Confidently handle “difficult” customers and situations
Interact effectively face-to-face, and via telephone and email.

Upon the completion of the theory content, the students will do work experience at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store in which they will “bail” clothing and shadow the cashier at the till. The students will also have an opportunity to serve food to our Stan Hagen Centre clients during the daily afternoon fruit/vegetable/dairy distribution. The goal of the work experience opportunities is to provide real-life experiences for the students to practice their customer service skills.

 

Introduction To Cashier Training (16 Hours)

This course provides students with the tools to effectively work as a cashier in the retail and food services industries. This course uses two cutting-edge Point of Sale (POS) software programs – Barnet(retail) and Volante (food services).

Barnet (retail) – Students will have access to a cashier till in a mock store scenario in which they will learn to greet the customer, complete the till transaction,properly pack and bag items, and say goodbye to the customer. They will also learn how to do returns and conduct an inventory of all of the stores items.

Volante (food services) – Students will learn how to serve food in a mock restaurant scenario – both sit-down and fast food restaurants. Students will learn howto greet the customers, take their order, place the order via the till, complete payment at till or via printing a bill, and how to say goodbye to the customers.

Wordplace Hazardous Materials Information System 2015 (WHMIS) (9 Hours)

This course is for anyone who works with or may come into contact with hazardous materials at work. This course provides students with an overview of the main components of the WHMIS system. Students will learn about: labels, safety data sheets (SDSs), and a summary of hazard classes/categories, including pictograms. Students may partake in an introduction to WHMIS 2015 PowerPoint presentation with the ES instructor and then will complete a WHMIS 2015 course and test online, in our Learning Centre, via the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website – or they can bypass the WHMIS 2015 PowerPoint presentation and solely complete the course online. Students must achieve a minimum of 80% on the test to receive a course certificate of completion.

Employment Workshops (Resume, Cover Letter, Interview Prep) (3 Hours)

These are one-day workshops that focus on helping students with their resume, cover letter and interview preparation skills. The ES instructor will facilitate the class through a guided discussion and will provide handouts with tips and templates. Upon workshop completion, students will be encouraged to book and appointment with the ES instructor to help them specifically with their own employment goals and/or challenges.

One-On-One Employment Counselling (2 Hours)

Clients may book an appointment for two hours at a time with the ES Counsellor. The ES Counsellor and client will determine the client’s employment goals and will work together to complete those tasks – resume, job search, applying online, etc.
